Why do New Years Resolutions so often fail?

The annual ritual of setting goals or shedding habits we don’t need any longer – invites us to let go of what holds us back and claim that which will lead to something better. A good idea!

The trap – and root cause of failure – is the mindset required for achievement. A subtle element that dictates if we will abandon our lofty and well-intended wishes – or soar beyond them.

Here’s the way it works:
Focusing on what we HOPE or WANT to achieve or let go of is a mindset of “lacking.” (I’ve lost before I step on the field.)
Subtle but powerful.

Our minds are rigged the opposite – a honing device for what we AFFIRM.
A simple example: “I am a positive and patient leader.” If you say this to yourself throughout the day for a full year, what will happen? Positive, patient behaviors will show up – often. Guaranteed.
In contrast, resolutions rely on willpower and forcing new habits – “I need/want to be more patient and positive with my team.”
What drains will not sustain.
You may be thinking: “I am” doesn’t feel true – yet.

YET….

When I declare it anyway, I make different decisions that align with the declaration.
This year, I am rocking it on physical self-care.
I am building trust with clients and family.
I am listening better to what people really need as they navigate constant change in their companies – so they feel encouraged, affirmed, emboldened.
Renewal accelerates energy.
Feed what you want and trust the process.
Enjoy the magic of ease and accomplishment!
